Devotional

Hosanna in the highest!

In Matthew 21:9 we see the crowds shouting "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" Our English word "hosanna" comes from a Greek word "hosanna" which comes from a Hebrew phrase "hoshiya na". And that Hebrew phrase is found once in the Old Testament, Psalm 118:25, where we see it as a cry to God for help: "Help, please save me! Hoshiya na!" But that phrase changed over the years and eventually became "Salvation has come!" It changed from a plea to a praise; from a cry to confidence. It changed from what you would cry in your moment of desperation with no hope in sight, to what you would cry in celebration as you see the rescuer coming to save you. Just as the people cried "Hoshiya na!" as Jesus entered the city, let us make that our personal cry. As John Piper once said:

"Let's make it our praise and our confidence. The Son of David has come. He has saved us from guilt and fear and hopelessness. Salvation! Salvation belongs to our God and to the Son! Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!"

Family Discipleship

The Triumphal Entry (Matthew 21:1-11)

  1. What did the prophet (Zechariah) prophesy was going to happen in Jerusalem many years later?
  2. What did the crowds of people do when they saw Jesus riding on the donkey toward Jerusalem?
  3. If Jesus is our King and Savior, how should we respond to him?

Worship Through Song

Hosanna (Praise is Rising)

: chorus :
Hosanna, Hosanna
You are the God who saves us
Worthy of all our praises
Hosanna, Hosanna
Come have Your way among us
We welcome You here, Lord Jesus

: verse 1 :
Praise is rising, eyes are turning to You, we turn to You
Hope is stirring, hearts are yearning for You, we long for You

: pre-chorus:
'Cause when we see You, we find strength to face the day
In Your presence all our fears are washed away, washed away

: verse 2 :
Hear the sound of hearts returning to You, we turn to You
In Your Kingdom broken lives are made new, You make us new
